Yamaha receives an order from partner Toyota to develop a hydrogen-powered internal combustion engine. Background: In the pursuit of CO2 neutrality, corresponding cooperation efforts have begun among major Japanese automobile companies.

Yamaha Motor develops V8 hydrogen engine with 444 hp.

The developed hydrogen V8 engine delivers 444 hp, which is only 13 hp less than the original petrol engine. Interestingly, the unit has 20 Nm more torque than the original. In the hydrogen variant, 540 instead of 520 Nm are now available.

The hydrogen engine project is part of the broader collaboration between Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Subaru Corporation, Toyota Motor Corporation, Mazda Motor Corporation and Yamaha Motor announced last November. The aim of the project is to research and develop alternative fuel options that should make it possible to make combustion engine technology (more) climate-neutral.

“Our efforts are to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050,” said Yoshihiro Hidaka, CEO of Yamaha Motor. He adds: “At the same time, the term motor is part of our company name. That means a natural enthusiasm and dedication to internal combustion engines. Hydrogen engines keep the spirit of the internal combustion engine alive while reducing CO2 emissions to neutral levels and producing more environmentally friendly vehicles. Working together in a team with other companies and their own corporate cultures, using a wide variety of expertise and winning an increasing number of new partners is the way that should point to the future.”
